Waterloo Biofilter Systems

The Waterloo Biofilter®
Waterloo Biofilter SystemsThe Waterloo Biofilter® is an advanced onsite wastewater treatment system for off-sewer developments including residential single dwelling households and cottages, decentralized commercial and light industrial lands such as golf courses, resorts and restaurants, as well as large clustered or communal systems.

Our patented technology efficiently treats sewage and other wastewaters, protecting our environment and ecosystems from pollutants such as E. coli, BOD, TSS, nitrogen, and even viruses. Proven in thousands of installations, Waterloo Biofilters are available in a variety of modular configurations that are easily scalable.

Waterloo Biofilters are well known in the industry for their outstanding consistency, longevity, low power consumption and nitrogen removal capabilities.

The Waterloo Biofilter system is fully approved for use in Ontario and many other jurisdictions across North America.

The Waterloo Biofilter ® System is extremely versatile; a number of different configuration options are available to ensure it will suit almost any site perfectly. The Biofilter unit itself can be hidden underground or incorporated into the landscape in an attractive above ground shed. In addition, the compact Waterloo Biofilter Area Bed uses 5-10 times less area then conventional disposal beds allowing minimal disturbance of the landscape and surrounding trees. This system is especially effective for difficult sites such as small or treed lots, heavy clay soils, shallow or exposed bedrock, and high water table.

Basket Biofilters
Below ground and out of sight

Basket filter installationWaterloo Biofilter Baskets are constructed of a rigid steel mesh that is coated for corrosion protection. Baskets are filled with the patented Waterloo Biofilter filter medium, shipped to site, and placed in a concrete or fiberglass tank. Baskets are sized for locally available tanks to reduce costs for the installer and homeowner. Treated effluent is pumped from the Biofilter treatment unit to a small disposal bed, leaching field or trench. Basket Biofilters operate in recirculation mode for increased nitrogen removal. The only moving parts are two high-quality, energy efficient 1/2 horsepower effluent pumps that operate intermittently throughout the day.

Benefits of the Basket Configuration:
Ideal for clay soils & small lots
Ideal for increased nitrogen removal
System is completely below-ground and out of sight
Baskets are sized for locally available concrete or fibreglass tanks
Baskets can be scaled up for any size home
Custom sized Baskets reduce excess treatment capacity and costs
Tanks are sealed and below-ground to block potential odours

HDPE Tank Biofilters
Lightweight for remote locations & faster installation

HDPEHigh density polyethylene (HDPE) Tank treatment units from Waterloo Biofilter are constructed of a very high strength, durable, and seamlessly blow-moulded high-density polyethylene tank. HDPE Tanks are pre-plumbed at our factory, filled with the Waterloo Biofilter filtration medium, and shipped to site fully assembled. Treated effluent is pumped from the HDPE Tank to a small, shallow soil disposal system. HDPE Tanks operate in recirculation mode for increased nitrogen removal. These units are lightweight for ease of transport, and come pre-assembled for an easy, ‘dig-and-drop’ installation. The only moving parts are two high-quality, energy efficient 1/2 horsepower effluent pumps that operate intermittently throughout the day.

Benefits of the HDPE Tank Configuration:
Ideal for small lots
Ideal for increased nitrogen removal
Lightweight tank is ideal for barging to islands & difficult access sites
System is completely below-ground and out of sight
HDPE Tanks are pre-assembled for a faster, easier installation
Minimizes site disturbance
Passive air vent fitted with activated charcoal filter to block potential odours

Flat Bed Biofilters

Lightweight & blends into landscaping with less excavation.

Flat bedWaterloo Biofilter Flat Beds are constructed of strong yet lightweight fibreglass shells containing the patented Biofilter filter media. Flat Bed treatment units are modular; additional Flat Beds can be installed in parallel or series to increase the total treatment capacity of the septic system. Wastewater is dosed to the Flat Beds via a small pump chamber with an electric or siphon pump (depending on site layout and elevations). Treated effluent gravity-drains out the bottom of the Flat Beds and flows directly into a disposal bed beneath.

Flat Beds can be located away from the house since no electricity is required at the Flat Beds themselves. Flat Beds are installed flush to grade and landscaped into the property with the supplied mulch or other porous covering. No distribution piping is required in the disposal bed resulting in a smaller system footprint and faster installation. With their low profile, Flat Beds can be installed in areas of high groundwater or bedrock without destroying the aesthetics of the property.

Flat Beds operate in a single-pass mode. The only moving part is a single high-quality, energy efficient 1/2 horsepower effluent pump that operates intermittently throughout the day. At sites where the Flat Beds can be installed 3-4’ below the septic tank outlet they can be dosed using a siphon pump, eliminating all electrical components in the system.

Benefits of the Flat Bed Configuration:
Ideal for high water table & bedrock
Ideal for small lots
Siphon-dosed option eliminates all electricity requirements
Lightweight units are ideal for barging to islands & difficult access sites
Shallower excavation with no distribution piping required
System is at-grade & aesthetically landscaped into property
Minimizes tree removal on the property
Minimizes raised mounding on the property
Mulch covered Flat Bed lids block & absorb potential odours

Cedar Shed Biofilters
An attractive solution for lakefront & difficult sites

ShedCedar Shed Biofilters have a base constructed of permanent wood foundation board, are spray foam insulated for winter operation, and are clad in attractive, stained, weather sealed cedar wood siding. Cedar Sheds are designed to work in the most difficult of sites; they are installed above ground to avoid bedrock and high water table problems, and they have the smallest advanced septic system footprint fully approved in Ontario with their compact design and no distribution piping required in the disposal bed.

Cedar Sheds are installed directly on top of a small, shallow Area Bed that easily accepts and disperses the treated Biofilter effluent it receives by gravity. Cedar Sheds reduce excavation depths, require only a single plumbing connection to hookup onsite, and significantly reduce installation time and complexity. No electrical components are required at the Cedar Sheds so they can be located away from the house and waterfront.

Cedar Shed Biofilters are the best septic system solution for homeowners wishing to preserve more of their trees and reduce raised mounds. The only moving part is a single high-quality, energy efficient 1/2 horsepower effluent pump that operates intermittently throughout the day. Cedar Sheds generally operate in single-pass mode, but can also be modified to operate in recirculation mode for increased nitrogen removal.

Benefits of the Cedar Shed Configuration:
Ideal for very small lots
Ideal for high water table & bedrock
Ideal for preserving trees on the property
Sheds are clad in attractive stained cedar siding to blend in with a cottage setting
Shallower excavation with no distribution piping required
Minimizes mounding on the property
Passive air vents fitted with activated charcoal filter to block potential odours
